Interview with Aminah Lawson

Age: 39
Ages/Grades of Children: 10 (5th) and 12 (7th)
Location: Greensboro, NC

Why and when did you decide to homeschool your children?

We started discussing homeschooling when our eldest was 1 and we started when he was 3. We wanted to be directly involved in our sons’ education. Also my husband noticed some things early on in our son’s personality,  that he felt would be overlooked or scrutinized in a “traditional school” setting.

How do you balance a work schedule and homeschooling?

I plan ahead for both work and school so that I can always be prepared for what’s to come.

What would you say to someone who may be contemplating homeschooling?

Pray about it and do your research. Research requirements for your state and curriculum.

What was your biggest misconception about homeschooling prior to becoming a home educator?

That it was something that white people that were well-off did.

How has homeschooling changed you?

It has forced me to not focus on self, and to think about others.

What’s your proudest homeschool moment?

Teaching my boys to read.
